Welcome to another round of Mystery Lyrics 2.0 with your host Dave
Seems there are a lot of questions on your mind about this way of playing Mystery Lyrics, and I would sure like to answer them for you. So as not to make this post too long, I have posted them on a separate page. Click here to be taken to the FAQs. If it doesn’t interest you however, let’s just get on with the show!
But before we start, congratulations to Cheryl (Aquara1997) who won the signed CD from last months featured artist Luthea Salom. Hope you enjoy it Cheryl!
Our thoughts today are also with Kat (who is not very well in hospital) and Sev (who is of course very worried). (((((Kat))))) get well soon, and (((((Sev))))) hold on in there my friend!
And, of course, we have a birthday in the house! Many Happy Returns go out to the Queen of Country Music herself, our very own Debi!
Hello ML family & Happy Birthday to my fellow Octoberites!!!
I think y’all know pretty much everything about me already, as I’ve had the most unique opportunity to meet a number of you in person. As you read this, I’ll have just celebratedmy 2nd wedding anniversary 4 days ago with my wonderful husband, Martin. We recently returned from an awesome vacation where we spent a couple of days in Phoenix, where the hubby surprised me with a “happy anniversary” message on the big jumbo screen at Chase Field where the Diamondbacks play. Then we spent the next 6 days in Las Vegas at the beautiful Palazzo the first 5 nights, then the last night he surprised me with the penthouse suite (1200 sq ft) at New York New York. We saw a show every night, which were all a surprise to me & also went to a NASCAR truck race. What more could a girl ask for!
I’ve lost count as to how many years I’ve been with Mystery Lyrics but I do know I’ve been co-hosting for a very long time. As one of our family members calls me, I AM the “Queen of Country Music”, which I know if you’ve seen my Country Fried Fridays, it’s my first love. I’m also a big fan of the 50’s, 60’s & very early 70’s and a HUGE Elvis, BeeGees, Elton John and especially Beatles fan.
Not much else going on in my little world here in southern CA, with the exception that now I need to save for a big 2 wk vacation next summer, where I plan on taking my beloved goddaughter, Chelsea, to Italy & Greece as a high school graduation gift. She doesn’t know about it and I plan on purchasing a pair of earplugs before I tell her about it, because I know how much she’s always wanted to go there and this girl can really let out a scream!
Hope this finds you all well and getting along ok with everything this world can sometimes throw at us. I’d like to thank PapaSev for creating such a unique and entertaining group and I am so grateful for all the treasured and valued friendships I’ve met along the way here at ML.
Love ya ~ Debi
This month we move from “Gimme a CD” from last month over to just a gimme … nowt to be won this time around, although I’m sure todays artist would have enough money to sponsor something
THE CLUE
![]()
While you Americans were singing “Born in The USA”, we in the UK had to make do with “Made in England”. The fact that our artist isn’t quite as masculine as his american pendant makes the song lose a lot of its potency somehow.
Todays song was the start of an awesome career for todays artist. Released in 1972 at the height of the space travel boom, it has been accused of being a rip-off of Bowie’s “Space Oddity”. It is though actually based loosely on a short story which is part of Ray Bradbury’s “The Illustrated Man”.
When I was a lad, it was just a very good song, that was it… but when I today read about the meanings to the lyric – most of them implied and very speculative – then it seems I must have been missing something somewhere.
This song reached #2 in the UK charts, #6 on the Billboard charts, and was ranked #242 in the 2004 List of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Your Lyric is:
- I’m not the man they think I am at home
Although this artist has been featured a massive 17 times on Mystery Lyrics, he doesn’t even come near to the top 10 of the most featured artists. Who do you think has been featured most? Have a look at the poll on the sidebar on the startpage (Home) and vote for one of the artists
Rocket Man – Elton John
(Elton John/Bernie Taupin)She packed my bags last night
Pre-flight,
Zero hour, nine a.m.
And I’m gonna be high as a kite by then.I miss the earth so much,
I miss my wife.
It’s lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight. And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I’m not the man they think I am at home.
Oh, no, no, no,
I’m a rocket man,
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone.Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids,
In fact it’s cold as hell
And there’s no one there to raise them if you did.And all this science,
I don’t understand.
It’s just my job, five days a week,
A Rocket man.

rocket man- elton john
First in today Sharon, answer on the spot, WTG!!
The clues sort of screamed Elton John and as much as I like his songs (even used him myself earlier this year) I confess I don’t know the lyrics all that well. So I looked. So it’s Rocket Man. So now I have to go and study those words more closely. Being a host with access to all the songs and artists information, I won’t comment on who has been featured most.
Continued good luck in getting folks to do this via your website.
Hil
Go on and have guess Hil, the Archives are all on this page anyway, if you know where to look for them.
Sort of hope it wasn’t Elton himself that screamed at you, but you’re right anyway, so WTG!!!
of course i’m not. i’m a rocket man.
Are you indeed?
WTG Alan!
Hi Dave This is “Rocket Man” by Elton John. Link, pics and lyrics to follow. Get well soon Kath and hang in there sev. Dan

Dan, I hope your pics didn’t get lost somewhere on the way…. I had to realise that this embedding of images isn’t working like it should. On the test drive, I strangely had no problems at all – thanks Murphy.
Whatever the case maybe, thanks for a fine answer this time around Dan. WTG!!
Rocket Man – Elton John

Rocket Man
Elton John
Rick
Right on the mark Rick , WTG!
That’s from “Rocket Man” by Elton John. I don’t care how gay Elton John is…he can’t even begin to hold a candle to the girlie-man-ness of Tommy James of Tommy James and the Shirelles. IMHO
– Phiz
Not being too familiar with Tommy James (apart from the one song), I can’t really comment on that one lmao, except to say Great Answer, wtg!!
yipes second try here LOL
I wish a speedy recovery to Kat. Sev my thoughts and prayers are with you both
{{{{{{{{{Debi}}}}}}}}}}}} I hope your birthday is great
{{{{{{{{{{{{Dave}}}}}}}}}}}}}} seems to be Elton John and Rocket Man. I love his music. I love Luthea’s too. When I want to relax I listen to her Cd, it’s very mellow. Without looking and without seeing where to post I am guessing the artist most used is either The Beatles or The Rolling Stones
How happy I am that you’re now able to get onto the website (((((Cheryl))))) and with the right answer too WTG! Glad you like Luthea’s music btw, I’m sure she will be thrilled to hear that
As far as the most used artist is concerned, you’re not too far out there …
Happy Birthday Debi, I didnt know you married into the MONEY!!
Chelsea is about to graduate???? time so flies…. The song is Rocket Man by Elton John, Debi and I both saw him at Dodger Stadium in 1975(unknown to each other) and he played for 7 hours, thats quite a repertoire. and hes had 35 years to add to it. top ten guesses include the Beatles, Kinks, Buddy Holly, Elvis, and at least one of Diana’s favorites
Scott
Sounds like it was a great concert Scott, 7 hours is quite long
WTG!
I”m thinking the song is by Elton John, Rocket Man- I finally was able to access this without being booted off! A very special Happy Birthday to a special friend, Debi. Also Happy Anniversary. Time flies when you’re having fun! Lynne
Glad to see you in here (((Lynne))). Its nice to see that my work is starting to bring in the fruits of my labour. Your thinking on the song is of course completely correct, so you get the accolades today … WTG!!!
{{{{{{Dave}}}}}
Rocket Man by Sir Elton…good tune
Mike (MSchoBlue)
I’m full of ‘em Mike … good tunes I mean
But this is one of my favorites. WTG!!
I absolutely love this guy….love gimmes too
this is “Rocket Man” by Elton John & thanks bunches for all the b’day greetings! 40 isn’t so bad after all LOLOL
Fits in well doesn’t it (((Debi))). I read it on your bio, but I must admit that it was a complete coincidence that I chose one of your favorite artists for this auspicious occasion. Hope you had a great birthday, 40 already? Who would have though that? WTG!!!

“Rocket Man”
by Elton John
I remember listening to that song as I drove from home to college (from Birmingham, AL to Houston, TX — RICE University) and trying to decipher the words.
it’s “burning down the fuse out here alone!”
and “How wonderful life is, when you’re in the world.”
Seems so easy now.
What were those “hidden meanings you referenced?
Spudpar
The hidden meanings? They vary from drugs (high as a kite) to Elton’s lifestyle (I’m not the man they think I am at home)… You can read more at Songfacts.com about this.
Looks like you have some great memories there though … wtg!!
{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{dave}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Thank you for the nice thoughts for my wife. Kat should be home tomorrow (Wednesday) . She had three stints placed in two arteries and they did a wonderful job at the hospital.
For those that don’t know… she had chest pains on Saturday Night and she asked me to call 911…..
today’s tune? Great Pick Dave It’s Elton John’s Rocket Man
sev
Glad to hear things are picking up Sev! Hope she’ll be back with you while I am writing this… Great that you took the time to look in despite all your worries. WTG!!
