Welcome to Mystery Lyrics 60s Extravaganza
with Dave the Face
and we’re going back in time to the Swinging Sixties today, to celebrate the way of life when we (at least some of us were) were young and some were even younger…

To celebrate this decade, I am going to present you with two songs that were both hits in the UK in the Sixties, but how did they fare in the USA? The music you are (hopefully) currently listening to by the way, has nothing to do with todays clues, it  just adds to the atmosphere.

So, and what about you then?

Todays first tune was the first favorite song I can remember having. It was released in 1964 when I was a mere youngster of 6 years, and spent 15 weeks in the UK charts. This song has the distinction of being the only 1964 number 1 in England that failed to chart at all in the USA. Written by band members Lionel Morton, Fritz Fryer and Mike Wilsh, and produced by Johnny Franz, the song was the the band’s second hit single. The ballad was originally intended to be released as a b-side (b/w “Tell Me Girl”). The song proved to be the group’s only Top 10 hit. They reached the Top 20 three more times after this, but never had another really successful single. They folded in the autumn of 1966, after their last single release, written by the ex-Springfields member Tom Springfield – “No More Sad Songs For Me” – failed to chart.

Don’t you, no don’t you let our love go astray in this way

The second choice for today was meant to be part of something much larger, and this concept allegedly inspired Pete Townsend to write Tommy. The song was a number 2 hit in England during the Summer of Love 1967 and was only denied the no. 1 spot by Engelbert Humperdinck’s Last Waltz. Its success was helped largely by being played on the pirate radio stations (Radio Caroline), and it was featured on BBC Radio 1’s first broadcast on 30 September 1967.

Features of the song were the guitar overdubbing by Steve Howe, the childrens choir, and the “true stereo” recording, a rarity in those days. The track was recorded incidentally At Abbey Road Studios.

On a side note: A youtube viewer said of this song: “As a 4 year old, this song gave me nightmares…”

In the between time though, it has been announced on the sellaband website that the project has found new owners in Munich, Germany. They have announced that the sellaband website is to go back online today. According to former CEO Johan Vosmeijer, the new owners will respect all committments towards believers who have invested in this project.

What does this mean for “Funding Bands”?

As yet there have been no transactions between Funding Bands and Sellaband! There is also at this present moment in time no reason not to carry on with the project. The development at the new Sellaband will have to be monitored carefully over the next few months, but even in the case that the new company does not take off, there are alternatives for us (e.g. Slice The Pie).

Musically they are: Hosting Mystery Lyrics about 10 times a month, maintaining three music lists including jazz and easy listening, and trying to fill requests. Movie-wise they are running a daily movie quiz, two weekly movie quizzes and a whenever I feel like it movie quiz dedicated to old movies. These things keep me reasonably sane and very happy. As long as mental and physical health continue, so will I.

Welcome to February’s online version of Mystery Lyrics!

Just going back to last months Mystery Lyrics for a moment, I presented a band that I had seen live in concert over christmas. Since then a video of that very concert has been released on youtube. You can watch the song I presented “Jesus Came Down” by Lake by clicking here.

Todays artist is an American musician and record producer, most famous for todays song which reached no. 5 in the billboard charts in 1983

FUNDING BANDS

He started his musical career as one-half of a Greenwich Village
folk group in the 1970s. In 1978 he moved to Los Angeles,
California, and sang for television commercials, and as a
backing vocalist for Rickie Lee Jones and Bette Midler. His debut
album reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also had
some continued success with the single “The Kid’s American”,
which reached #33 in 1984, but the single failed to match the success
of todays song. His second album, Bouncin’ Off the Walls (1984),
failed to gain much momentum — even with an innovative music
video for the single “Bouncin’ Off the Walls”, with only the title
track making the charts (#52), and was subsequently deemed a
commercial failure.

Despite the collapse of his solo career, he continued his career
in the music industry as a songwriter and as a record producer
for such acts as No Doubt, 702, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson,
and Joanna Pacitti. He lent his singing voice to the character of Ling
and was nominated for an Academy Award for Original Music Score
(along with David Zippel and Jerry Goldsmith) for his work on the
Disney film Mulan (1998). He has also done production work on
Australian singer-songwriter Mig Ayesa’s self-titled album released in
April 2007 and has helped with production on Hayden Panettiere’s album.

For theatre, he has once again paired with Zippel to provide the music and lyrics for Princesses, a musical comedy update of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel A Little Princess. The production ran at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle but has yet to open on Broadway.

He produced the hit album Tragic Kingdom for the band No Doubt. He has also worked with singer Miley Cyrus on her Hannah Montana song “G.N.O. (Girls Night Out)”.

Taking up the lead from Mike, today I am going to present you with a band I saw Live between Christmas and the New Year.

This anglo-german band achieved modest success in much of Europe from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s, particularly in Germany where they were named artist of the year by the German Phono Academy in 1977. That same year, their self-titled debut album reached #92 in the US and the single Time Bomb reached #83, which would prove to be their greatest success in the US. They toured the US in the late 1970s as the opening act for various headline acts, including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Oak Arkansas, and Neil Young. After their contract with CBS was discontinued the label released previously unavailable live material from stage appearances between May 1979 and October 1980. The band was able to sign another contract with the German Polydor label and in 1984 they released album #6, No Time for Heroes.

They disbanded in 1988 and in 1991 singer James Hopkins-Harrison died from an overdose of heroin.

At the beginning of the new millennium the band was revived by Alex Conti, including Mike Starrs , Adrian Askew, Mickie Stickdorn and Michael “Bexi” Becker. In March 2005 their first studio recording for 20 years was released: The Blast of Silence.

They are renowned for their rather american sounding “West Coast” sound, which led their own web site to ask the question: “Why would Americans fall in love with foreigners, who “just” sound American, when they have such a wide range of high profile bands at home?”, which they answer themselves … “You not only have to be good, you have to be better than the rest!” Well, I’ll leave that to you to decide …. certainly Alex Conti is in my eyes one of the best rock guitarists around, and Mickie Stickdorn no mean drummer.

The song I am looking for today is from their eponymous album. It is googlable and there is quite a lot of info to be found on the web, so give me the works
