Get A Clue: A week or so ago I came across this song on youtube when I was actually looking for something completely different. It is from a movie I went to see with my mother when I was a little boy.

The film is based on a broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein which opened in November 1959. It was their last musical. Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premier.

The 1965 movie soundtrack was released by RCA Victor and is one of the most successful soundtrack albums in history, having sold over 11 million copies worldwide, and has never been out of print. The songs are so famous that most of them have their own Wikipedia page!

It is the story of the von Trapp families flight from Nazi infiltrated Austria  to Switzerland, and starred Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and Eleanor Parker.

Awards: The Broadway Musical won a Tony and The film 5 Oscars, and will now be awarded a “Sunset” for being one of my favorite films – albeit one I have not seen for at least 35 years. For some reason it doesn’t appear to have been broadcast on German TV while I have been here. Well, now its top of my wishlist at amazon

I am really looking for the artist that performed this song in the movie – either the name of the character or the name of the actual artist, or if you want a bonus point, both!

Climb Every Mountain – Peggy Wood (dubbed in the film by Margery McKay)

Peggy Wood sang it.  She was the Mother Superior/Mother Abbess.  It’s climb every mountain from the sound of music.

  2. birdjayne says:

  4. Hil says:

Well, certainly enough clues today, Dave. This is Climb Ev’ry mountain, from The Sound of Music. I guess it is sheer coincidence that I am planning to do Rodgers & Hammerstein next month as a follow-up to The Gershwins and Cole Porter. Of course, I have an mp3 for you. It is sung by The Mother Abbess, played by Peggy Wood. Peggy, not being  much of a singer is dubbed by Margery McKay. Couldn’t find much on Margery.

    • Dave says:

Of course it is pure coincidence Hil, I won’t tell though ;) Great work as usual, it is your metier after all lol. and many thanks for the music

re:   Crosby, Stills & Nash (Sometimes Young)

    Is this similar to:  a,  e,  i,  o,  u and sometimes y ??

  6. Gary says:

It’s sung by Peggy Wood or the Mother Abbess in the film Sound of Music.

  10. Carol says:

    The Sound of Music

    That was easy!

Wow…7th grade music class…my eye opener for Mike for so many new kinds of music….chronologically from Handel to Bernstein…listening to The Sound of Music….Edelweiss, The Sound of Music, Sixteen Going On Seventeen, My Favorite Things, and of course, this one…Climb Every Mountain….gotta love that final note :-)   I think the singer in the movie is Peggy Wood.
    Mike (MSchoBlue)

  12. FarawayEyz says:

Climb Every Mountain – from The Sound of Music (of course)
Peggy Wood, as the Mother Abbess, was the singer.
….and what little girl’s first crush wasn’t the Captain, with his strict, suave manner and his broken heart??!!?!
And Christopher Plummer’s looks didn’t hurt either.
Again, thanks to all the vets — I’ll say especially WWII today, owing to the setting of this movie.

  13. Camelot says:

Climb Ev’ry Mountain     Peggy Wood as Mother Abbess  (dubbed by Margery McKay)

    Happy Birthday Marcia Marcia Marcia!

  14. DianaHnt20 says:

“Climb every Mountain” from “Sound of Music.  Sung by Peggy Wood, playing the Mother Abbess (dubbed by Margery McKay)

    Diana

  15. Lyle Wogomon says:

Sound of Music : Climb Every Mountain
Peggy Wood (Ghosted by Marjorie McKay …  Mother Abbess

  16. Scott says:

In the Sound of Music, Peggy Wood as Mother Superior seems to be singing  Climb Every Mountain, but she couldn’t hit the high notes, so they ghosted in Marjorie McKay, whose voice you actually hear in the movie.   :-)

  17. BREN2S says:

(Not sure if this is what your looking for or not)

  18. Dave says:

Exactly what I was looking for Bren, wtg!!

And I am also looking for your pics too I’m afraid :( Somehow they don’t want to be publiched on this page and after an hour of fighting with them, I admitted defeat and gave up… very frustrating. something to look into for next month…
