Welcome to Mystery Lyrics
with your Host Dave.
Its a musical milestone today as we look back at a legendary German rock anthem.
But first we have a birthday to celebrate …. our friend Scott (Lurkyfoot) is not quite as young as he was yesterday! A Happy Birthday to you Scott, hope you have a great time
There’s still a little uncertainty on how to answer the lyrics using this form of play (i.e. the website). Just scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will see a comments box. Enter your answer and hit “submit comment”. If you would like to send links, enter them as you would into an email. Pics can now be uploaded using the upload box beneath the clue. It is still in Beta but worked in tests today. BTW do not be afraid to comment on this page, your email address will not be revealed …
The Clue
A couple of weeks ago I bought a CD entitled “Inga Rumpf and Friends” which is a live CD recorded for “Rockpalast” television programme. Main protagonist is, apart from Inga Rumpf, Jean-Jacques Kravetz on Hammond Organ. Since buying the CD, it has been playing in my car continuously
But lets turn the clock 40 years or so and have a glimpse at the rock scene in Germany. While young Germans were listening to the electronic/jazz/rock sounds of Amon Duul, Triumvirat, Passport etc., a sound that was even accepted abroad in England and the USA as it was something new and fresh on the market, Inga, Jean-Jacques and others were building together a progressive blues-rock band, that would change the face of German Rock.
“The quartet’s music reflected strong influences from such innovative contemporary blues greats as Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. Within a few years, the respected publication “musikexpress” named the band the Best German Rock group while heralding Inga Rumpf as “the greatest individual talent on the German Rock scene” ” (from Inga’s bio)
The song I am looking for today is a classic. It was originally recorded in 1971 and was on the bands 2nd LP, entitled, appropriately enough, “2″. The german music scene is so in awe of this song that it has been said that no one has had the courage to cover it. It has in fact though been covered by a band called “Mob Rules”. But this is not who I am looking for.

well wb Bill, and with such a fine answer too…wtg!!
Shar on Mon, 22nd Oct 2007 9:19 pm
Happy Birthday Scotty!
Beam me up already! (says Kirk)
hey Dave… let me guess, you were the one who featured Frumpy before, right?
This is How the Gypsy was Born
I would imagine it involves the usual way, but I’ll have to listen carefully to the lyrics to see if there is some gypsy magic involved

Dave on Mon, 22nd Oct 2007 9:20 pm
Your deducing is sound (((((Shar))))), and so you get the answer completely right. I do wonder about the lyrics though too… that is, are they written purely by the imagination of the band, or is there some gypsy folklore or legend in them? At least, they are very interesting…
renfield on Tue, 23rd Oct 2007 2:12 am
hmmmm
I come up with ATLANTIS ?
how the gypsy was born
Dave on Tue, 23rd Oct 2007 2:13 am
Atlantis is not completely incorrect Gary, as Frumpy were the forerunners of this band, basically with almost the same line-up, so I’ll give you credit for the answer today.. well done!
Scott on Tue, 23rd Oct 2007 4:06 am
Well i really can’t wait to hear this one, my birthday anthem, LOL It’s Frumpy, opposite of me, i’m casual, doing How the Gypsy was Born. is it anything like the uriah heep song Gypsy??
Dave on Tue, 23rd Oct 2007 4:07 am
Well, here’s birthday greetings to a casual guy!!! Hope you will like your birthday anthem
You know I never would have compared Frumpy to Uriah Heep, but there are similarities between the two songs you mentioned, mainly the heavy use of the organ, in this case the hammond organ. A great song!! Its one of those songs that you listen to as loud as you possibly can to really get the goosepimples…
BTW I had the privilege of seeing this song being performed live in the spring of this year, and belive me, it was a privilege…. gigantic!!
Amy on Tue, 23rd Oct 2007 1:03 pm
“How the Gypsy Was Born” is it Frumpy? (The band’s name, not their clothes!)
Dave on Tue, 23rd Oct 2007 1:04 pm
correct you are Amy! wtg! I dont know about the clothes though…
Peter on Wed, 24th Oct 2007 7:02 am
hallo David,
irgendwie hat es nicht mit der Antwort auf der Website hingehauen.
hier ist die Lösung.
Frumpy - How the Gipsy was Born
And God saw that this work was nearly done
a green, mighty planet circled round the sun.
Silver fishes increased in the blue seas
all kinds of feathered built their nests in the trees.
And God saw that everything was nice
but there had to be a creature who looked like me and you - so he realised!
So he took some earth and put it in a form
but the oven wasn’t hot enough - so the white man was born!
Walk on, walk on, you can live in the cold zone of the world
’cause you are used to it, since your birth.
I have to build another creature who looks like me and you
but one who’s not so pale - he has to get a hotter blow!
So he took some earth and put it in a form
but the oven was too hot now - so the black man was born!
Walk on, walk on, you can live in the hot zone of the world
’cause you are used to it, since your birth.
I have to build another creature who looks like me and you
but one who’s not so dark - he has to get a special blow!
So he took some earth and put it in a form
an the oven was right now - so the gipsy was born!
Go to the top of the mountain and look, do you see this land around?
Go where you like to be ’cause you and the gipsy will be free …
