Welcome to Mystery Lyrics with your Host Dave.
OK, we’ve done a couple of songs in foreign languages before, but none, as far as I am aware, in Turkish. All will now change.
Being married to a Turk, I obviously at some point was confronted by turkish pop, and indeed in the early and mid 90s there were a lot of up and coming artists in the what I call the “Early classical pop scene”. This scene was mainly due to 2 pioneers Baris Manco (who had blazed a trail in the 60s with his brand of pop mixed with turkish influences) and Sezen Aksu (who is without a doubt the mother of turkish pop). In fact it was Sezen Aksu who brought forth a lot of new talents during this period, including todays mystery artist.
The Mystery Artist is a trained soprano, and a winner of the Eurovision Song Contest for Turkey in 2003 with a song in english. She also sung one of various versions of “Private Emotion” with Ricky Martin
Todays choice is from her debut album in 1995, produced by Sezen Aksu, and is the title track of this LP. The lyric is googlable… but yes, I still know I am taking a risk on this one ![]()
Your lyric is:
“Bir turna olsam, yollara vursam”
No, I dont know what it means either, but this is a beautiful ballad, that needs to be listened to. And if this artist has been featured before then I will eat my hat…

That is “Lâ’l” ( tr. Ruby wine) by Sertab Erener. I give up trying to find translation with flailing of hands and gnashing of teeth.

Lâ’l
Bir bulut olsam, yüklenip yaðsam
Dökülsem damla damla topraðýma
Bir deli nehir, bir asi rüzgâr
Olup kavuþsam üzüm baðlarýna
Bir çið tanesi, bülbülün çilesi
Annemin sesiyle güne uyansam
Radyoda yanýk, içli bir keman
Aðlasa nihavend acemaþiran.
Bir turna olsam, yollara vursam
Uçabilsem kendi semalarýma
Bir seher vakti, sýlaya varsam
Selam versem, ah sýradaðlarýna
Komþunun kýzý, çoban yýldýzý
Yaz bahçeleri yeþil mor kýrmýzý
Ah þiþede lâ’l, hem de ay hilâl
Bir daha da görmedim öyle yazý.

That’s Sertab Erener, Dave, a household word around here.
I was just telling Sharon the other day, “Ya know, we haven’t heard much Sertab Erener lately.”
Just kidding Dave, I’ll give it a listen.

. :Sertab Erener - La’L : .
i’m not a language expert by any means…
but i believe ‘Lal’ is the hindu word
for ‘beloved one’…
i might be on to something….
Dave on Tue, 31st Jul 2007 2:15 am
Hmmm, I really couldnt tell you Gary… L’âl certainly isnt a turkish word, could be arabic I suppose, but then again Hindu sounds as good as anything lol, certainly “beloved one” fits the mood of the song
Maybe we should ask Daniel Jackson?

I think you are reasonably sure of eating normal lunches and dinners Dave. The song is called La’L (waiting to see the translation, which is probably “Welcome to Jamaica have a nice day”) and the non hat eating artist is Sertab Erener.
Dave on Tue, 31st Jul 2007 4:15 am
Certainly hope so Scott!! I havent quite taken to eatings hats yet
wtg!!
And who said anything about translations anyway?… Google doesnt do turkish and the only other website I found made this of the song…
One each cloud olsam , shoulder law Be poured drop drop earth One each madness river , one each rebellious wind Olup quilted turban grape bee One each çi each , nightingale hank Mother sesiyle güne uyansam Radio burned , soppy one each violine Alasa nihavend acemairan. One each crane olsam , shipment vursam Uçabilsem self semalarıma One each time before dawn in due time sılaya hallucination Greeting version , ah sıradalarına Komunun red , chepherd star Summer having a garden yeil violet red Ah iede lâ’l , and also even if moon crescent Once more even if vision so writing
See any Jamaica there?
