Welcome to another round of Mystery Lyrics with your Host Dave!
Yes, you’ve noticed, I’ve changed the theme of the page again. This is because a black background is a little difficult when working with graphics. A couple of new features have been added to the site - “EMail this Post” and “Print this Post“. These do exactly what they say, i.e. email the post to a friend, and print out the post on your printer! Make good use of these functions!

There are no birthdays on the birthday list today, so lets get on with todays clue and my reminiscences of my musical youth in the city of Hamburg, Germany.

When I came to Germany at the back end of 76, Hamburg was the place to be as far as popular music was concerned. Numerous clubs, such as the legendary “Onkel Pö’s Carnegie Hall” as well as Logos, Winterhuder Fährhaus etc. made sure that you could go out on a weekend and have a good time. The place I used to frequent was the “Markthalle” (Market Hall) just off the central station. Here I saw many many great artists, German and international alike for the standard price of 8 Deutschmarks (about $5.60). Then they came… US Rock Greats, famous for their one rock song, the ultimate bikers song. And all of a sudden we were being asked to pay 15 Deutschmarks (about $10.50), although they had passed the height of their fame and hardly an original member of the band was still in it. Oh we laugh now, but at the time this was really expensive!
The song we are looking for is on one of the first LPs I bought in Germany, it was released in 1968 - and even today it is one of my favorites, if only for the memories…
“Take my hand if you don’t know where your goin’
I’ll understand, I’ve lost the way myself”
This band has been featured several times before, but I’m always grateful for pics and links ;). To answer to this post, scroll to the foot of the page and add your comment. Pics as usual to sunsetcowboy2000@aol.com

As we look back in Lyricland today, our thoughts are with Sev, the compiler of this feature, whose father is sadly very ill… Sev is now with his father and therefore we have no “Looking Back” for July at present (at least it didnt get through to me…). At any rate the important thing is that Sev is with his dad! Dont worry about us Sev, we’ll get along fine

Desperation - Steppenwolf
Wasn’t John Kay German? That’s probably why the price almost doubled.

Hi, Dave. This turns out to be Steppenwolf doing Desperation. All I know about Steppenwolf can be covered in one WILD/CARPET ride, even though as a dispenser of music, I have a half dozen other songs in my collection. I’ll certainly listen to this one, though.

desperation by steppenwolf. ah yes, the ultimate biker band, thanks to one biker song and movie ! they could play, though, and had a place in my life for a time. not for 10.50 though! (although I remember paying something like $3.25 to see the Beatles at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium.) I don’t think the Shea tickets were a hell of a lot more than that. This was 64-65 and 66. In 64, my VW beetle cost three bucks to fill up, and a carton of cigarettes was about two bucks, maybe a little less! If you do the pro rata math, gas AND cigarettes are much cheaper than concert tickets now. Sevvie, praying for you, bud.

Desperation by Steppenwolf. I ended up making my own looking back by using the list Sev sends out everymonth at the end of the month of the complete month of songs used that month, I’m still missing a few months though since last pc crash LOL.

Biker? Did you say biker? How fortuitous. Lollipop n* mentioned that I was MIA this weekend and I admit to being at Road Atlanta for Cycle Jam. We really had to keep our motors running, but not out on the highway. This was on the track where we ran our two Triumph Daytona 675 Triples. Our riders did a great job with some wicked competition. I may not have been born to be wild, but I am about my Lollipop n* of course. The song is Desperation by Steppenwolf. I’ve updated the link below, if anyone would care to see what we’re doing.

Desperation Lyrics
» Steppenwolf
When rain drops fall and you feel low
Ah, do you ever think it’s useless
Do you feel like letting go
Do you ever sit and do you wonder
Will the world ever change
And just how long will it take
To have it all rearranged
Tell me why these things are still the same
Tell me why no one can seem to learn from mistakes
Take my hand if you don’t know where your goin’
I’ll understand, I’ve lost the way myself
Oh, don’t take that old road it leads to nowhere
We must return before the clock strikes twelve
It’s so easy to do nothin’
When you’re busy night and day
Take a step in one direction
And take a step the other way
So don’t stop tryin’ when you stumble
Don’t give up should you fall
Keep on searchin’ for the passway
That will lead you through the wall
Don’t look back or you’ll be left behind
Don’t look back or you will never find peace of mind
(((Dave))) Hugs, Geena

Something called Desperation by Steppenwolf, a pretty horrible band. They were so bad we booed them off the stage at Cleveland Public Hall in what seems like a million years ago.
