The future of the Mystery Lyrics Website (a preliminary analysis)

“Please rate the relevance of the Mystery Lyrics Website to the game Mystery Lyrics: irrelevant

Room for comments: The site has gotten away from the original intent which was “Mystery Lyrics” and has become a site of it’s own with the Mystery Lyrics name. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with your web site it just has little to do with Mystery Lyrics. It either needs a closer relation to the original Mystery Lyrics or a different name. Some people are confusing the two.”

Hi Folks!
At last someone has spoken out loud what has been on my mind for a while, and was one of the main reasons I set up this survey at all. Does the Mystery Lyrics Website deserve to carry the name Mystery Lyrics? Or has it developed away from the original game? The comment above shows that at least one person thinks it is so. And although it was answered anonymously, I do have a good idea who posted it. And believe me, it is someone I should be listening to.
Looking back over the years since I started doing the website, which started life as a simple Newsletter, it has developed rapidly. I remember certain designs and ideas implemented that were far more popular than today, when it was a simple static HTML job with no possibility of interaction with the reader. But things changed, as they invariably do. I’m no longer able to keep up with publishing the clues and answers of the hosts every day, it is too much for me, popular as it was…
And so I began to look for ways to change, making the site more attractive but less work for me. Wordpress came along at the right time, giving readers a chance to comment on posts, to vote on various matters and partake in trvia and quizzes. And as my knowledge of this system developed, so did the site design.
For a while things went well, but I soon realised that to keep the readers coming back time and time again, I had to be constantly thinking of new features. Whereas in the beginning, polls attracted sometimes more than 100 voters, in the end it was barely 10. And so it is with “Name That Tune“.
Somewhere along the line I realised that our generation isn’t too interested in computers and websites – they’re happy to be able to send and receive emails (although archiving emails is not the easiest of jobs). The Forgotten Hits Website is nowhere near as popular as the Newsletters Kent sends out. I realised all this when I started hosting Mystery Lyrics via the Website… the comments I took from certain members (albeit a minority) were sometimes were unbelievable… People who were being entertained for free were telling me how to do my job.. and players let me know what they thought about the idea by not participating
And so the Mystery Lyrics Website developed into what it is today… Name That Tune (which is not so different from Mystery Lyrics – maybe I could re-name it the the Online Mystery Lyrics Clip or something similar), a few unpopular quizzes, surveys, discussions. I have done my best, but, apart from Name That Tune, none of the features are attracting visitors
I have come to the conclusion that the Mystery Lyrics Site, as a representative of the actual game, is maybe not needed or even wanted. If all the above-named features were not on the site it would have practically no visitors at all…. I am certain that a good many of the players aren’t even aware of the Site, certainly it has received little or no promotion
It has never been my intention to use the name Mystery Lyrics to my advantage. I don’t need the ML website to play Name That Tune, I have other sites that could be used, and I am quite sure that people who like to play would follow me there. Maybe its time to say enough is enough, with no hard feelings…. I don’t know
Let the discussion begin….
Cheers
Dave

Dave and anyone who reads this:

I am a relatively simple guy, and this, pure and simple, is recreation for me. I couldn’t care less what it’s called and I couldn’t care less about the philosophy of it all. If I wanted philosophy I would read kierkegaard. The closest I come to him is a cheese Danish. It’s rec. Fun. Not to think about. To have fun with. You bust your ass, Dave. Others bust their asses. I hope all of you enjoy it, cause I certainly do, and I never, ever intend to either criticize any of you or fail to keep enjoying it. I am grateful to have a little diversion like this . I don’t get why anyone would go any deeper than that. We are not talking about chemotherapy; We are talking about guessing the name of a song and a band. And that, to me, is just about the beginning and end of it.

Well said, Alan. I agree! Thanks Dave for all you’ve done and for all you do!

I’ve been with Mystery Lyrics long enough to be a little old lady now and I can say that I enjoy both forms of the game. As I’ve said before though, I am short on time during the school year and afraid that I don’t spend as much time on both as I used to. We hosted Mystery Lyrics more frequently, but had to cut back to the fifth Saturdays of the month. The older I get, the slower I get, but please don’t think that we don’t appreciate what you do. I understand the time and effort involved because I also maintain 3 sites for my brother’s business and our racing team. There’s a whole lot involved. Always remember that people behind computers in the privacy of their own homes can be a pain. The familiarity that the internet breeds also seems to overstep the limits of courtesy. If you enjoy what you’re doing, go for it. I’m opening up a links page on the racing team site for sponsors, friends, and fans. If you’d like a link on the page, let me know.
